Sloppy Joes (a.k.a. Barbecue Hamburgers)

  • 1 lb. Ground Meat
  • 1 C. Onions, chopped
  • 1 C. Celery, chopped
  • 1 can Tomato Soup mixed with 1 can Water
  • 1 tbsp. Prepared Mustard, optional
  • 2 tbsp. Vinegar, optional
  • 1 can Tomatoes, optional
  • Salt and Pepper

Brown meat and sauté vegetables. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.

Grandma did not put in the ingredients described as optional.

This was the official birthday party entree. The only substitution I can remember was hot dogs. Sloppy Joes were served with potato chips, pickles, and soda that Grandpa brought home from the soda machine at Benna’s Garage. Angel Food or layer cake (with dimes) was the birthday cake.
