Norwegian Berlin Wreaths

  • 1 1/2 C. Softened Shortening (1/2 Butter)
  • 1 C. Sugar
  • 2 tsp. Grated Orange Rind
  • 2 Eggs
  • 4 C. Flour

Mix shortening, sugar, rind, and eggs thoroughly. Stir in flour. Chill. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Break off small pieces of dough, roll 6″ long and 1/4″ thick.Form each piece into a circle, bringing one end over and through in a single knot. Leave 1/2″ on each side. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Brush tops with meringue (made by beating 1 egg white until stiff, gradually beating in 2 tbsp. of sugar). Press bits of red candied cherries on center of knot for holly berries. Add little jagged leaves cut out of green citron. Bake 10 to 12 minutes.

Makes about 6 dozen.
