- 1 package Active Dry Yeast
- 1 1/4 C. Lukewarm Water
- 2 tbsp. Sugar
- 1 3/4 C. Lukewarm Milk
- 2/3 C. Sugar
- 1/2 tsp. Salt
- 2 Eggs, beaten
- 1/3 C. Softened Butter
- 10 Cardamom Seeds, crushed
- 6 C. Sifted Flour
Dissolve yeast in water for 5 minutes without stirring, then stir well. Add 1 tsp. sugar to the heated then cooled milk. Add the yeast mixture. Add about 2 cups of flour to make light sponge. Cover, let rise one hour until bubbly. Stir down and add sugar, salt, eggs, butter, and powdered cardamom seed. Slowly add the remaining flour until a soft fough. Knead on lightly greased surface and place in a greased bowl. Let rise 30 to 45 minutes. Divide dough into 2 parts and divide each of the 2 parts into 3 and braid. Place into pans and let rise 30 to 35 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Brush tops with mixture of 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tbsp. water and then sprinkle with remaining sugar.
Delicious cut in slices and toasted in the mornings.
